Textiles Committee named as 9th approved laboratory to test and certify PPE body coveralls; developed fully indigenous Design PPE Testing Equipment

i.The Textiles Committee has worked hard to develop the testing equipment namely “Synthetic Blood Penetration Testing equipment” for Determination of the resistance of Protective Clothing materials to penetration by blood and body fluids.
ii.India has become the world’s second largest manufacturer of personal protective equipment (PPE) body coveralls within two months, following China.
iii.The laboratory set up to test the PPEs has to be accredited by the NABL (National Accreditation Board for Testing & Calibration Laboratories).

Govt amends rules to ban global tender for procurement up to Rs 200 crores to benefit MSMEs

Government has notified the amendments to the General Financial Rules(GFR) 2017 to ensure that goods and services valued less than Rs 200 crores are procured from domestic firms
Which states that the global tenders will be banned for government procurement upto 200 crores as announced in the AatmanirbharBharat Package. This move will boost domestic suppliers, particularly Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises(MSMEs).
About GFR:
It is a compilation of rules and orders of the Government of India to be followed by all while dealing with matters involving public finances. It was issued for the 1st time in 1947 bringing together in one place all existing orders and instructions pertaining to financial matters.

 i.Ministry of Commerce and Industries lifted the ban on export of non-medical/ non-surgical masks of all types.
ii.KVIC has already developed double layered cotton masks and triple-layered silk face masks.

 The Union Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given its approval to the following on May 20, 2020:

Overview of Monetary Policy Statement 2020-21 released by RBI

On May 22, 2020, The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has released its Monetary Policy Statement 2020-21 in Mumbai , Maharashtra. The three-day (May 20 to 22,2020) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) virtual meeting by the 6 members was headed by RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das.
Highlights of the meet:
All members of the MPC unanimously voted to reduce the policy repo rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) to 4.0 % from 4.40%.
– RBI extends moratorium on loans for another 3 months till August 2020
– India’s 2020-21 GDP growth rate expected to be negative
– Reserve Bank infuses Rs 15,000-crore line of credit to EXIM Bank
– RBI increases export credit period to 15 months from 12 months
– Reserve bank grants Rs 15,000-crore refinance facility for SIDBI
– RBI eases CSF withdrawal rules ; arranges additional Rs 13,300 crore for states
– Industrial production decrease by 17 % in March with manufacturing activity down by 21 % : RBI

World Bank announces $160 billion assistance to 100 countries

KKR buys 2.32% in Jio Platforms for Rs 11,367 crores

Scientists at Pune based ARI maps 2 alternative dwarfing genes in wheat that can eliminate rice crop residue burning

According to the research published in The Crop Journal and Molecular Breeding, a team of Scientists at the Agharkar Research Institute (ARI) based in Pune (Maharashtra) have mapped two alternative dwarf genes – Rht14 and Rht18– in wheat that can eliminate rice crop residue burning.
i.The team, led by Dr. Ravindra Patil, has mapped chromosome 6a dwarfing genes in durum wheat and developed DNA based markers for better selection of these genes.

A rare palm from Andamans ‘Pinanga andamanensis’ replanted at Kerala’s JNTBGRI

A rare palm of South Andaman Island ‘Pinanga andamanensis’ will be grown in Palode (Kerala) with the help of  Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute (JNTBGRI).
i.Pinanga ,recorded as a time-extinct species, is related to Areca Palm. Around  600 plants are found in a small area of ‘​​Mount Harriet National Park’ in South Andaman.
